When I saw the trailer for this movie, it brought back the biology teacher in me. While I probably won't get a chance to see it in theaters (unless I can find a great babysitter!), I can't wait to see it! And if I were still in the classroom, it would be a great teaching tool. [By the way, check out the Disneynature African Cats page for a free educational activity guide!]
While Little Bear isn't quite old enough for movie watching yet, I am sure that we will have some biology lessons of our own with it in a couple of years. In the mean time I did let Little Bear watch the trailer with me. Typically Little Bear never gets to see TV, so when he sees even a 2 minute clip - he is enthralled. This was even more so, he kept saying "again! again!" and while watching it he kept pointing and saying "kitty" then roaring. It was adorable and I am so glad that he already loves animals!
Just because African Cats is a nature film, don't be deterred. Previously Disneynature has had amazing success with Earth in 2009 and Oceans in 2010. Both of which had record breaking openings for nature documentary films and proved that you don't have to be a science geek to love nature films!
So whether or not you are a biology lover like me, I highly recommend that you go see African Cats. Just watch the trailer below and you will be enthralled with the amazing cinematography! Plus if you go see African Cats during opening week (April 22-28) a portion of the proceeds will be donated through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund to the African Wildlife Foundation. These funds will be used to protect the African Savanna and help ensure the future of lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras, giraffes, and many other animals.
Leaping into theaters on Earth Day, 2011, “African Cats” features the real-life love, humor and determination of the kings of the African savanna: Mara, an endearing lion cub who strives to grow up with her mother’s strength, spirit and wisdom; Sita, a fearless cheetah and single mother of five mischievous newborns; and Fang, a proud leader of the pride who must defend his family from a rival lion.

My kids loved Earth. We've seen the previews for this one, but we don't usually see movies in the theatre b/c of the cost.
